2021-2022 Nonprofit Youth Enrichment Grants Awardees

The Camden Junior Welfare League has awarded three Kershaw County nonprofits with grants totaling $3,500 to benefit the youth of Kershaw County. The following grants were awarded:

Arts Center of Kershaw County/Kershaw County Music Association - Funding a student scholarship to the Brevard Music School in Summer 2022.

Boys & Girls Club of Kershaw County - Funding the purchase of materials to provide supplemental academic support for the students served in the Be Great Academy after school programs within Jackson Elementary and Midway Elementary Schools.

United for Baby Kershaw County - Funding the purchase of diapers, wipes, and other infant necessities to be distributed through a Diaper Day Giveaway drive, benefiting approximately 85 Kershaw County families.

​Fall 2021 Classroom Enrichment Grants Awardees

The Camden Junior Welfare League awarded 10 Kershaw County School District educators classroom enrichment grants totaling more than $4,500. Grants were awarded as follows:

Vincent Albano, Camden High School - Funding the purchase of key equipment to help students studying sports medicine to recognize and treat heat illnesses in athletes. 

Dr. Chantelle Baker, Stover Middle School - Funding the purchase of math manipulatives, tangible objects used to help students solve math problems. These materials will be used in small group instruction in 6th grade classrooms and the self contained special education classrooms. 

Darlene Butler, North Central High School - Providing start up funding for special education students to create a coffee/pastry shop for teachers as an ongoing fundraiser for student projects and field trips. Students will learn life skills, while working in an organized working environment, that will help them to become more employable after graduation. This grant will assist in start up cost and daily operations costs.
Elizabeth Cassidy & Heather Reid, Camden Middle School - Funding the purchase of materials to assist special education students in acquiring cooking skills, while also expanding math and reading skills. 

LaKesha Meredith, Kershaw County Virtual Academy - Supporting a project that partners 7th grade students studying ecology with K-2nd students in order to write and publish children's book about environmental issues. Copies will be available to the public through the Kershaw County Library system. 

Susanmarie Miles, Camden Elementary School - Funding the purchase of a Qball and accessory materials, to increase student participation in all subjects by engaging students and, in turn, building social and emotional wellness.

Reagan Payseur, Camden Middle School - Funding the purchase of additional lower-reading level books with a variety of topics and demographically diverse characters to engage middle school students in reading. 

Celeste Ranson, Lugoff Elementary School - Funding the purchase of a variety of sensory tools to assist students with learning disabilities achieve optimal performance and behavioral regulation. 

Anna Rhyne, North Central Elementary School - Funding the purchase of C-Pen Readers to provide text-to-speech support for students with reading disabilities, in order to provide better access to the general education curriculum and environment. 

Laurie Robinson, Lugoff Elgin Middle School - Funding the purchase of materials that will address the needs of speech pathology students at the middle school level while keeping students motivated and engaged. 

Spring 2021 Classroom Grant Awardees

The Camden Junior Welfare League awarded 12 educators in Kershaw County classroom grants totaling more than $5,000. Grants were awarded as follows:

Kristine Britt, Wateree Elementary School - Funding the purchase of eBooks on the 2021-2022 South Carolina Picture and Children's Book Award Nominee list, which will allow virtual students to enjoy the books immediately and participate in the SC Book Awards programs next school year. 
Rebekah Clements, Baron Dekalb Elementary School - Funding the purchase of STEM and science materials to be incorporated into speech therapy sessions in order to address speech-language goals while maintaining science education. 
Caroline Gross, Doby's Mill Elementary School - Funding the construction of a sensory path throughout the school, to assist students with sensory and/or transition needs. 
Katey Hancock, Lugoff Elementary School - Funding the purchase of STEMpathy kits for 3rd-5th grade students to build empathy for others while completing tasks related to STEM. 
Pamela Horton, Lugoff Elgin High School - Funding the purchase of a 3D printer for students to develop design and engineering abilities while studying geometry concepts.
Veronica F.A. Jamison, Jackson Elementary School - Funding the initial installment of books to stock a new book vending machine, using books as incentives and prizes for students.
Jennifer Lott, Jackson Elementary School - Funding the creation of a student garden to be used annually, with rocks painted by students, in order to create a bed full of positivity and color. 
Joseph R. Miller, Camden High School - Funding the purchase of Subwoofer audio speakers for students to listen to and produce realistic audio quality tones during class and band sessions. 
Dana Sims Watkins, Bethune Elementary School - Funding the creation of an action-based learning environment in the special education classroom, allowing students to move while learning, providing purposeful movement and strengthening development gaps. 
Kim Stokes, Continuous Learning Center - Supporting the creation of a reading challenge for 4th-12th grades and the continued development of a student library. 
E. Lee Westbury, Montessori School of Camden - Funding the purchase of hands-on molecule building kits for 8th-9th grades students. 
Monica Woodberry, Blaney Elementary School - Funding the purchase of a document camera in order to make instructional time more efficient during virtual learning for kindergarten students. 

2020-2021 Nonprofit Youth Enrichment Grant Awardees

The Camden Junior Welfare League has awarded grants totaling $5,000 to three nonprofits serving the youth of Kershaw County. Grants were awarded as follows:

Arts Center of Kershaw County/Kershaw County Music Association - Funding a student scholarship to the Brevard Music School in 2021.

Boys & Girls Club of Kershaw County - Funding the purchase of COVID safety supplies at their ten Be Great Academy after school programs within Kershaw County schools.

Truth in Nature - Funding the purchase of fishing and cooking supplies to be used during activities that support boys and young men from single-parent households in Kershaw County.

 

Fall 2020 Classroom Grant Awardees

The Camden Junior Welfare League has awarded Fall Classroom Enrichment Grants to eleven Kershaw County School District educators, in nine schools within the district, totaling nearly $5,000. Grants were awarded for the purposes of supporting student enrichment in math, language and writing, arts, life skills and leadership, physical education, and STEAM. The following grants were awarded:
Koehler Beard, Leslie M. Stover Middle School – Funding the purchase of a classroom set of novels with age-appropriate format and characters for middle school students with special learning needs to practice reading while staying engaged in the material. 
Arisleida De Guzman, Camden High School – Funding the food preparation portion of the functional curriculum for students with moderate disabilities, in order to obtain the skills and experience to reach a maximum level of independence. 
Lynley Jones-Blankenship, Continuous Learning Center (CLC) – Funding the purchase of flexible seating in the virtual lab, to allow high school students to remain engaged while working towards their diplomas.  
Dana Sims, Jackson Elementary School – Funding the purchase of C-Pen Readers for a special education classroom, supporting students as they practice reading by displaying word definitions and reading text aloud.  
Amy McSwain, Lugoff Elgin Middle School – Supporting the construction of an outdoor playground to allow students in a special education classroom movement break that focus on balance, gross and fine motor skills, communication and social skills. 
Christi Bigony, Doby's Mill Elementary School – Funding a “smart garden” that grows flowers, herbs, and vegetables in the classroom, supporting student scientific inquiry development with hands-on activities with visible results. 
Dianne Farlett, Midway Elementary School – Supporting the purchase of books for the new “Bobcat Books” vending machine, supplying books to take and keep at home as a reward for students who display good reading habits.  

Sherri Johnson, West Wateree Early Learning Academy - Supporting the creation of an outdoor classroom in order to engage preschool children in real world learning about nature and plant growth.  
Amanda Raper, Doby's Mill Elementary School – Funding the purchase of reusable Makedo Invent Classroom sets to encourage students in all grade levels to use their imagination and creativity while participating in hands-on science investigations and engineering challenges in the STEAM Lab. 
Kimm Mack, Jackson Elementary School – Funding the purchase of problem-solving tools which students will use to collaborate, apply math strategies and engage in writing activities to promote problem solving.
Christina Absher, Pine Tree Hill Elementary School – Funding the creation of an outdoor classroom learning environment for teachers and students to utilize in small groups to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
